Straw Rockets Day 2

No votes have been submitted yet.

This is the 2nd lesson is a 2-part series. Students will expand their knowledge of Newton's laws while building, launching and changing the design of paper rockets. This design and modeling exercise by JPL/NASA starts students off with a simple design and data collection question. Build, launch, record. Then they change the length of the fuselage, launch and record. Incorporated are different iterations of the rockets from nose cones, fuselage length, mass, diameter, and fin shapes and sizes. There are articles linked into the presentation and notes to support the lesson through ELA.

In this hands-on lesson, students use the engineering design process (EDP) to create a prototype of a device that can prevent squirrels from accessing a bird feeder. This is a great way to integrate
