STEM In A Box

PD Hours 5.00

Explore properties of matter and the separation of molecules through hands-on inquiry. Experience the integration of engineering, physics, chemistry, and biotechnology. Participants will construct and operate a gel electrophoresis chamber out of household items. Students will discover how molecules move through an agarose gel matrix, and how physical and/or chemical properties are linked to the distance molecules migrate. This experiment will also open up the conversation about the use of food dyes, the different types of food dyes, and what is in the foods your students consume by determining which dyes are in candies.
This workshop is based on a kit & curriculum from Bio-Rad Education.

Although the content for students is for 6th-12th graders, ALL teachers K-12 are welcome, you will experience building and operating a gel electrophoresis box from household materials.

All workshops are from 9am-3pm on the GCU campus, includes breakfast (830am), lunch, and a 5 hour PD certificate. Content is aligned to the AZ Department of Education State Standards.
